David Bridie has been doing film soundtracks since 1985, mostly in collaboration with fellow NDW guitarist John Phillips, though NDW as a band did a few back in the late 80s. John and David worked out pretty early on that making band records without hit singles and a model out front for the photo shoots was a precarious way to make a living. The atmospheric and textural style of music of NDW, MFTCC and David's solo outings has lent itself to soundtrack work, and offers have been consistent and the productions of a high quality. David has been doing a fair bit on his own, most notably the award winning In a Savage Land soundtrack which featured a sweeping orchestral score combined with collaborations with musicians from the Trobriand Islands in PNG. Here is an outline of the major films and documentaries that David has been involved with over the years including soundtrack details where applicable. |

UNRELEASED SOUNDTRACKS
The Man Who Sued God Mark Joffe 2001
Quite a varied soundtrack... The god/heavens theme was represented by some arias (four in all) that I composed with the help of David Abiuso (ex-cake double bass player now residing in the UK). Mezzo-soprano singer, Miriam Allen, sang some lyrics I wrote and were then translated into French and Latin by my father, Ross Bridie. These were sung over orchestral backing, arranged by Helen Mountfort. Chris Scallen and I worked up some drum and bass and Aphex Twin-esque programmed textured loops... We brought in the help of Jim Moginie, from the Oils, who helped out with some fine guitar work, and Bruce Haymes, hammond organ master. "Breath," off act of Free Choice, and "Cello Song for Charlie" off the Good Luck record were brought into the soundtrack by director Mark Joffe working perfectly in their particular scenes. Don Watson, who wrote the fantastic bio on Paul Keating, and was in fact Paul's speech writer, wrote the script for this very amusing film. Obviously helps having Billy Connolly and Judy Davis deliver the lines. 'Twas a successful film... Didn't release the soundtrack... the score is so varied, I thought it wouldn't work as a record in itself... jumped around too much... However, I am thinking of putting together a couple of hundred burns of the soundtrack for fans and selling them over this site... Let me know if you're interested!
Waiting At The Royal Glenda Hamblyn 2000
Written and directed by Glenda Hamblyn, the director of Fran, and set at the Royal Women's Hospital, as four woman of diverse backgrounds cope with long hospital stays during pregnancy. The score is sparse, mainly piano, bilas (a PNG word for gritty decoration) and noises with a collaboration with George Telek on the closing credit music. The Bob Mouldish bogan bowling music track is an exception.
River Street Tony Mahood/Linda House 1997 (#)
Developers threaten a local community centre in this moral tale of real estate agents versus the good guys. Worth watching for the scene where a bulldozer pushes a brand new Mercedes into the Yarra River.
Idiot Box David Caesar 1995 (#)
David Caesar's loud and in your face exploration of working class lads as they deal with the boredom of unemployment and dream of finding a way out of it all. Funny and tragic, with lead roles played by Ben Mendhelson and Jeremy Sims. David and John contributed two cues to this film; a miserable bagpipe piece played by an old cricket mate of David's, and a NIN inspired electronic cacophony for the failed bank robbery.
That Eye the Sky John Ruane 1994 (#)
Based on Tim Winton's novel, John Ruane&Mac185;s wonderful film explores the nature of faith and family through the eyes of the main character, a young boy named Ort. If you saw Cloudstreet and haven&Mac185;t seen this, it is really worth getting. The soundtrack has an expansive rural Australia feel and is as sad as the film, littered with harmoniums, strings and pianos together with old synthesizer bits to match Orts imaginary eye in the sky. The soundtrack is unreleased but a couple of these tracks can be found on the MFTCC album, 19 Easy Pieces.
Greenkeeping David Caesar 1993 (#)
David Caesar's first teature. Grass and "grass" dominate the life of Lenny (played by Mark Little) as he struggles to maintain his relationship and the bowling club lawn. Some of these pieces are on the Projects cd and there's a version of Greenkeeping on MFTCC's Brood album.
