September 2005
Greetings
The site was down for about a month there sorry to rik... It weren’t his fault.
Anyway ‘tis fixed now.
Biggest apology was to Canberra and Sydney NDW fans for the cancellation of the gigs...
CD OF MELBOURNE CORNER HOTEL SHOW
If you are upset you missed out on the Canberra and Sydney gigs and annoyed that Melbourne audiences got a show, we’re prepared to burn cds of the desk mix Tim did of the Melbourne gig... Send a stamped self addressed envelope that will take a CD in it to:
NDW CORNER HOTEL RECITAL
MANA MUSIC
117 ROUSE ST
PORT MELBOURNE
VIC 3205
And we will send you a free CD. Now a warning that it has only the first set plus the end encore (ol’ Timmy forgot to press pause on the mini disk for the second set... doh!) And the sound quality is of desk mix quality... Which means by the nature of it, certain songs sound better than others... But it's not too bad...)
The cd contains:
1. Mr Suharto Man
2. Plog
3. Sky The Towel
4. Yes Sir I Can Boogie
5. Teteko
6. The Same Heat
7. Up in the Mountains
8. Wobble
9. Storm
10. Walk me Home
11. Albert Namatjira
12. Crazy Birds
We might chuck on a few tunes from the St Martins Theatre gig of 1987 to fill out the CD and make up for the pause button.
We did film the gig... the visual show put together by Tim and Russ was damn evocative... Lots of ol fave ndw visuals plus a heap of new stuff. We’ll work out what to do with that footage at some point... We were going to release a DVD of the whole gig but the pause button put paid to that... (Editor’s Note: Well, you’ll just have to have another gig then won’t you...) There’s some photos of the show that Ian Corcoran took which well put up on the site at some stage...
Cake gigs at the Spiegeltent Tuesday, November 8th and the Northcote Social Club Friday, November 11th. We’ll be trying out a few new tunes. Been rehearsing up “Fiesta” by the Pogues, a drunken encore song. Could be a hoot. Have to admit I’m looking forward to playing the Northcote Social Club. It’s a great venue and I can walk home at the end of it. Be good for the cake to be back in a pub.
Also check out new Cake website put together by Andrew McRae... Has NDW photos of Corner Hotel... http://www.mftcc.com/
NDW play Queenscliff Festival November 26th and 27th with special guest bass player Paul Cartwright. Headline (last band) on Saturday night with the full visual show plus we’re doing a lazier Sunday early afternoon show.
Press release
Not Drowning, Waving's Tabaran re-released!
Not Drowning Waving's “Tabaran” recorded in Rabaul at the Pacific Gold Studios in collaboration with Telek and a variety of other PNG performers will be re-released on September 16th on Liberation. This 2005 deluxe reissue has been completely remastered, and comes with a DVD containing a film for every track.
The DVD features the original film clips for the singles Pila Pila and Up in the Mountains and clips for Sing Sing, Blackwater, Tabaran and The Kiap Song from Mark Worth's Documentary. There are new clips for the remaining songs using footage from the recording sessions at Pacific Gold Studios and from the recording of Garamut drummers on Ponam Island. Along with footage from gigs in Rabaul, Paddington RSL in Sydney and the Unity Concert in Port Moresby. Additional footage came from Mark Worth, Tim Cole, Russel Bradley and David Bridie's trips to PNG over the years.
The DVD also features bonus material including Not Drowning, Waving (with Telek, Ben Hakilitz and Pius Wasi) performing Amidel at Lonely Planet warehouse rehearsals in the lead up to Womadelaide 2005. An alternate film clip for Abebe, of village life in Rabaul 1988 by Stuart Miller. Including the bbq with NDW and Moab Stringband and a guest appearance by Larry the pig! The DVD also has the film clip for George Telek's West Papua from his album Amette.
Available in stores on Liberation and or online in the Cake Store.
Anyone thinking of coming to Vanuatu? Tis going to be a cracker. If you make it... Come and have a beer or kava with the band. As well as NDW and Telek playing at the festival... Telek is doing a club date... Probably on the Monday night tho still haven’t been told yet... Wouldn’t be surprised if NDW ended up doing some songs... Should be a hoot!
“Because of Ghosts”, the band that supported us at the Corner were pretty bloody good. Worth checking them out if you get he opportunity.
Halou have a new ep out. “Wholeness EP”.
Rebecca Coseboom, the singer with Halou of course sang on David’s track “The Tender Trap” off the Hotel Radio CD.
Mmmmm Rick Wakeman... Seriously, it was a bad look back then, let alone now. Too harsh Roy, not harsh enough HG.
Have been in a writing burst... Broken a drought that has lasted 18 months... each Wednesday night and Friday at the Enormodome, Chris and I, Phil and Greg have been working on new tunes... We’ve got 8 songs happening at present and each new day brings better results... I’m pretty excited... For what its worth the ProTools folder is called CHALET after Steve Coogan’s show band on his Alan Partridge show... The best tracks are titled “RASKOL DUSTY”, “DOWN BY THE TRIBUTORY”, “THE CARNIES”, “SUCCUMB”, “ANGEL”, “BOORONG WATER STEPS”, “THE STRANGENESS OF THINGS” and “LICK MY LOVE PUMP”!... Follow their progress from here on in.
On Thursdays I’ve been getting together with Helen and working on new Cake tunes... “She dreams all different colours”, “Resting Place”, “Edinburgh Tattoo New Years Day”, “My Pentacostal Friend” and “The Best Awful” are those songs...
I’ve a benefit gig for Fitzroy High School this Saturday and I’m gonna throw myself in at the deep end and try a bunch of these new tunes for the first time... Well, just piano and vox versions.
Have just mastered the RAN soundtrack... The 6 part series goes to air in late October from what I’ve been told... I thoroughly recommend it... Tis groundbreaking stuff in that it captures contemporary Torres Strait lifestyles and issues... The CD should be released prior to the show going to air.
Am still in negotiation trying to get a Melanesian record label off the ground called “THE SING SING” label. The aim is to establish a label to release and export the Melanesian music that has come out of The Enormodome over recent years. We aim for high quality production values, artwork and audio. We have a board of management to guide us through decisions as to what to release and to make sure the money made goes back to the artists to help them maintain their careers. (People such as Meg Taylor, Ben Hakalitz, Glen Low, Pius Wasi, Airi Ingram, William Takaku) We have the resources of the Enormodome, plus the commitment of people like Russel Bradley (artwork) and Tim Cole (sound recording and mixing) plus a sister studio in PNG (Glen Low’s Southern Star Studios). Already we have the following releases ready to go (some are reissues):
GEORGE TELEK: Telek, Serious Tam, Amette, Rock Stringband Album
PIUS WASI: Mambu Music
BLACK PARADISE: Spirit Of Mambesak
TROBRIAND ISLANDS WASI MUSIC: from the ‘In A Savage Land’ sountrack

CLUB MU (Traditional music from the Chimbu Provence recorded whilst John Phillips and I did the soundtrack to Mark Worth’s Raskol’s documentary)
WILLIAM TAKAKU CD
SOUND OF THE MORNING STAR CD
AIRI INGRAM

Indonesia accused of Papua atrocities
SMH August 19, 2005
By Tom Allard
The Indonesian military has murdered independence activists, raped women and razed villages in Papua, a report by University of Sydney researchers alleges.
Citing witness accounts and testimony from church groups and other activists, the report, Genocide in West Papua?, has renewed calls for a change in attitude from Australia. Both the main Australian political parties have told Jakarta they support its sovereignty over Papua.
A former Dutch territory, resource-rich Papua was fully incorporated into Indonesia in 1969 under a highly controversial United Nations-supervised ballot involving only 1025 voters in a region with a population of almost a million at the time.
However, the report says most indigenous Papuans still want independence and that a build-up of Indonesian troops in recent months has been accompaniedby new abuses and repression.
"Military operations have led to thousands of deaths in Papua and continue to cost lives," it says.
Kopassus troops - Indonesian special forces - were responsible for the death of a pro-independence priest, the Reverend Elisa Tabuni, last year, the report said, citing the Papuan Baptist Church as its source.
Indonesian troops were also responsible for burning 371 homes in Puncak Jaya and stealing livestock at the end of last year, it said. Soldiers raped at least one woman during the operation, unnamed witnesses said. More than 6000 displaced Papuans were said to remain in hiding in the jungle.
It is also alleged that as recently as February, more property was destroyed in Papuan villages while Jakarta-backed militias had also murdered dissidents.
The report also outlines corrupt Indonesian military activities including illegal logging, rigged construction projects and theft of aid, as well as prostitution and the spread of HIV/AIDS.
A spokeswoman at the Indonesia embassy in Canberra denied the allegations and called on the University of Sydney researchers to hand over evidence so it could investigate.
