June/July 2001

Hi! Been on holidays; drove up to Darwin. Who said you need a 4-wheel drive. Toyota Camry—made for rough Aussie conditions!

USA RELEASE
I've signed with Nettwerk for US and Canada release of Act of Free Choice, to happen in Feb. I'm very pleased, especially as they have mc900ft Jesus, Tackhead and Sarah McLaughlin. We'll see how it goes; perhaps that DVD will see the light of day.

AOFC TOUR
Just about to head off on Aust tour. It shall be a mix of (1) 'on my own' gigs with the occasional help of some basic rhythm loops (Adelaide, Hobart, NSW Uni, Brisbane and Alice Springs (August 24) and (2) fully-fledged band gigs with Michael B, Chris S and Phil W for Melb, Canberra and Sydney (sorry Perth). The tour is for the release of the Act of Free Choice 5 track EP. We've worked out a few new tunes for the gigs; Hide, Malaria, Sprawl and Come Around, and may even reprise the Taps 'Gimme Some Money'. Copies of the EP, with all proceeds going to West Papuan human rights watchdog, ELS-HAM, will be on sale plus video copies of the Act of Free Choice films. The films are not available in stores.

The ep has a great club mix of the track Act of Free Choice done by Nick Littlemore. I sang a rough 3am vocal on this track of Nick's 'Moving with My Heart' that came up pretty well. I think we'll get together a bit more on the next album as it's a musical association that's pretty effortless.

DARWIN
Played for the first time in Darwin at a great open air gig, called Brown's Mart. Neil Murray played his song 'Melbourne Town' with me, Airi from Drum Drum joined me on NDW's Tabaran track, 'Blackwater' and a mate, Marc Wohling played guitar on 'Koran', 'Malaria' and 'A Midlife's Tale'. Good place Darwin; the museum, weather, the old yatch club bar by the sea, camping on the beach at Gunn Point ( a beach not a situation!).

YEPERENYE FESTIVAL
It's kicking along and the acts confirmed are Paul Kelly, noKturnL, Archie Roach, Coloured Stone, Christine Anu, Yothu Yindi, Slim Dusty, Frank Yamma, The Mills Sisters, Teenage Band, John Williamson, Warren Williams, Warumpi Band, Jimmy Little plus all the Arrente mob singing Yepernye songs. Stu McPhee is doing the mix and Chris Scallen is doing the soundscapes with me.

Nearly finished the soundtrack for 'The Man Who Sued God'. Simon Polinski is going to mix it and Chris Scallen has programmed some very cool rhythms to go alongside the spacious mezzo soprano arias featuring the fine vocals of Barbara Stanwell and Miriam Allen, the orchestral compositions and some hi pass filter loops and Nord textures. Bruce Haymes played some amazing Hammond. He's a gem and a Dees supporter to boot.
