September 2000
Hi ..another diary waffle
Have just been bumbling about at home of late - finishing off my studio
in the backyard which has been built from scratch, and gearing up for the
next tour with some reworkings of songs - and Ive been working on a couple
of small film projects.
The next single in Australia is FLOAT due out in the second week of October
to coincide with a national tour starting at the LIVID festival, then heading
to all major cities excepting Perth plus some regional centres... probably
wont have supports but some djs playing some back groove music - we'll end
up towards the end of November joining up with Coldplay.the dates will be
up on the front page of this website later this week. The Float four track
single is a great package - well I think so anyway. Chris Scallan (BASS)
mastered the single for me , editing down the album version of Float and
compressing it a little to raise the vocal level - tis edgy and gritty. The
other three tracks include Brisbane's Full Fathom Five corker of a Float
mix, NZ's Salmonella Dub's very stoned dubby remix of Kerosene which is
sublime, delving into some of the odd Ian Caple loops and the fourth track
is the drums and bass Moloko mix of The Koran ,the Ghan and a Yarn which
was previously only available on vinyl.
Shot a film clip for Float with Robby Douglas Turner. We got hold of this
amazing super 8 footage of Pig iron Bob Menzie's funeral on the streets
of melbourne with rows of police a la WEF/S11 - (tis a bit like john howard's
Australia). This footage is intercut with my shadowy lip syncing which was
shot in this fantastic old timber mill at the foot of the westgate bridge
and some stuff on the old port melbourne rail line. Was great working with
Robby again Robby worked with Not Drowning, Waving. We did an ep and tour
together,he did this weird david byrne style vocal on two tracks Little
King and I Did which can be found on the Cold and the Crackle record.
After a year of backyard mayhem, the studio at the back of my house is finally
finished..tis quite spacious ,soundproofed and feels like a great working
environment its basically two big rooms - a control room and a large recording
room, capable of fitting a band for live down recording sessions - for me
is a bit of a dream come true - being able to have control over my own creative
output - being able to record when I want and with whom I want - not having
to rely on record company permission and not having to pay exorbitant studio
fees - am trying to think of a name for the studio. Simon Polinski suggested
"Steaming Gents" which I quite like but if anyone has any suggestions -
bung me an email... it'd be most appreciative
Have done the soundtrack for a doco by Andrew Wiseman entitled "Wonder Boy"
and produced a song by Koori singer Kutcha Edawrds (who sang the bv's on
The Last great Magician) entitled "Galleries of Life" which was commissioned
by the new Melbourne museum for the bunjilaka (koori history)section.
Played a gig with Telek for the 25th anniversary of Papua New guinean independence
which was an absolute hoot at the Powerhouse in Melbourne. Telek's album,Serious
tam is sitting at number 5 on the CMJ world music chart in the US. The album
is getting great reviews in the states and is definitely worth getting hold
of if you havent already - its on Real World everywhere except for Australia
where it is out on Origin records Philipm@originmusic.com
Once again, have a look at the west papua link sites on the link pages of
this site - if you haven't already - a place very close to home here in
Australia, a country that is going through some unmentionable turmoil and
human rights abuse, and a country which deserves our support at this time
in history - The United Nations got involved in East Timor after the fact, after
too many lives had been lost and we have the opportunity to not allow that
to happen again in Western Papua
Audio Snippets - Actual Size who do the website for me have finished the
audio grab section of the site and is ground breaking in his design - it
features snippets of tracks off the album and a variety of film soundtrack
extracts from over the past 5 years
