May 2000
We've been in rehearsal at Adelphia, a wonderful space in Fitzroy run by
these three Greek brothers. It's spacious, homely and close to the Aussie/Indian
restaurant.
The band is Michael Barker (drums), Phil Wales (guitar) and Chris Scallan
(bass) plus an assortment of keyboards and triggering sample devices. I've
played with Michael in the Cake and on various film projects. Phil plays
with Telek and once upon a time ventured out with Seven, Harem Scarem and
Robbie Craw. Chris assisted Ian Caple on the recording of the album at Macedon,
is a fine bass player and is the key to the on stage technology we are using
for samples and soundscapes. Thursday the 18th was our first gig; a 30 minute
3RRRFM live to air from the Rooftop cafe.
The web site is slowly coming together - sorry, it's just taking a bit more
time than I envisaged. Those sections still "Under Construction" should
be finished by the end of the week. It's kind of a fluid thing. New elements
will be added and updated over time. I'll soon have some of the audio files
up: you'll be able to hear early demos, unreleased tracks, current soundtrack
offerings and some of the soundscapes that fly around the background of
the album.
This Friday (26th) I will be playing a gig at the Opera House in Sydney
with Ben Hakalitz (Telek's drummer) as part of the Reconciliation Week that
John Howard is doing his best to sabotage. I'll be playing stripped back
versions of the album on the Playhouse Theatre's deluxe grand and Ben and
I will play a few Telek tracks as well as a couple of old tunes. Starts
at 8pm.
Just prior to the tour, we will play gigs in Melbourne (21ST) and Sydney
(20TH) with fellow EMI act The Doves from Manchester. Their album is entitled
"Lost Souls".
In June I will begin work on the soundtrack for a short film called "Saturn's
Return" by Christos Tsalkos (the film"Head On" was based on his book 'Loaded').
It's a story about a gay Greek couple dealing with the impending death of
one of the men's ex-hippy father... I've long been a fan of Christos' writing.
It is one of four half hour dramas Commissioned by SBS as part of their
drama and documentary series "Hybrid Life" which marks Australia's centenary
of Federation.
#Check out the link to L Ron Hubbard's microphone collection on the links
page. Ian Caple put me onto it. And for those who were inquiring, no I'm
not a bloody scientologist. Shonky in the extreme, a backyard psych theory
masquerading as a religion for tax purposes. Perfect for wealthy Hollywood
types.
#did the soundtrack to John Moore's doco "Thomson of Arnhemland". It's about
Donald Thomson's passionate photographic and anthropological work with aboriginal
communities in the top end of Australia from 1935-1950 Š tis worth having
a look. It will be screened on the ABC on June 29th
